Animal antics in the supermarket aisles

Last weekend I saw love for animals taken to weird extremes - a grinning fox sitting on an equestrian's shoulders and an excited elephant hugging a crocodile. I should probably explain that these were all fellow punters at the Big Chill music festival, where animal costumes seemed to be everyone's preferred weekend outfit.

This month, animal lovers get to stand up and be counted in a vote to decide the nation's most animal-friendly supermarket. Shoppers can choose the retailer they think puts animal welfare first in this RSPCA-sponsored award.

It's encouraging to hear that higher-welfare, organic and free-range food is becoming increasingly important to supermarkets and customers across the country.

But what about everything else we put into our shopping trolleys? If we want to buy green, is it up to retailers to offer the most planet-friendly products - or to us to demand them?

Apps like the Good Shopping Guide help you suss out the ethical credentials of certain products. But it can often feel impossible to know the environmental impact of everything we might need to buy.

Our new campaign will be examining this issue in a few months time. Watch this space.
