Walk to work for a healthy planet - and buns
Ever since I moved to Newington Green, which is a short hop from Friends of the Earth's offices, I've shunned crowded buses and travelled to and from work on what the old geezers call 'Shanks's Pony' - my own two feet.
According to Living Streets, currently celebrating Walk to Work Week that gives me "a bottom pert enough to balance a cup of tea on".
I'm not sure about that but I've decided to join in the celebrations by sharing some photos from my daily journey.
First off, a photo of my trusty trainers. They aren't beautiful - but they are indestructible, comfy, and easy to stash into a bag when I change into something smarter at work:
Secondly, some wildlife. Walking to work reveals a surprising array of wildlife lurking around the gardens, hedgerows and waterways of the Big Smoke.
As soon as I brought my camera out all the ducklings, cormorants and bluetits I routinely spot seemed to go into hiding, but here's some wildlife I did manage to snap:

I know, I'm never going to win Wildlife Photographer of the year.
The other pleasure of walking to work is spotting those little things that would otherwise pass you by - the latest graffiti under the canal bridge, a Dad and daughter strolling along deep in conversation, a bin man absorbed in reading a leaflet he'd pulled out of the recycling...

All in all walking is a vital antidote to hectic city life - and a far nicer way to start the day than crammed into a tube carriage or bus. Even if I still have some work to do before I can balance my morning cuppa on my gluteus maximus...
