Aviation

Aviation is an ever-increasing form of transport, but with this growth comes more damage to the environment. Birmingham Friends of the Earth campaign to keep this a sustainable form of transport.

  • The Problem: Civil aviation is one of the fastest growing sources of human greenhouse gas emissions, and airports generate noise pollution, air pollution, and traffic congestion. However, despite this, the UK Government wants to see airports across the country expanded to meet the forecast growth in demand for air travel.
  • The Solution: Aircraft manufacturers can deliver quieter, less polluting planes, but the Government must review its aviation policy to prevent the unrestricted growth in flights cancelling out the environmental benefits of new technology.
  • Take Action: Help local groups oppose airport expansion proposals in your area, and lobby your MP for a national policy that allows only as much aviation growth as can be achieved without an increase in the local and global environmental impact of airport operations.

See our the Aviation section on our website for more information, latest news, and a list of local group coalitions that oppose airport expansion in Birmingham and the Midlands.
