Bury FoE took part in officially the biggest simultaneous premiere in film history when we went to see the People's Premiere of Age of Stupid, a film about climate change.
The film, starring Pete Postlethwaite was shown across 80 cinemas in the UK along with a live satellite link to London's Leicester Square where the film was shown in a solar powered cinema tent.
From our seats in Bury's Vue cinema in Pilsworth we watched various celebs arrive by low carbon transport and come down the green carpet in Leicester Square.
After the film we went back to the live link up and saw a Q&A session, the highlight being when Pete Postlethwaite pledged to give back his OBE if the Government approved a new coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth in front of Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband.
Back in Bury, Clare Kenny from the Wildlife Trust urged us sign up to the Not Stupid campaign and to take part in the Stop Climate Chaos march in London on 5th December 2009, a few days before the international climate change talks in Copenhagen.
Finally, our own Lynn Leyland-Mather gave a talk on what we can do in Bury ... join Bury Friends of the Earth.
The film went down well with the audience and left a lasting impression.
In the film, Pete Postlethwaite stars as an archivist living in the devastated world of 2055 that has been ravaged by runaway climate change. He watches old footage and asks: Why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance?
He focuses on six true human stories from 2008 to help us understand what went wrong. This is mixed with (real) news reports and animations.
We recommend you go and see it. Let's hope the film comes back to Bury soon. It will be showing in Manchester at the Cornerhouse from 29th May 2009.
