December 2009
More than 50,000 people took to the streets of London on 5 December 2009, with thousands more joining them in spirit in Glasgow and Ireland.
In doing so, they sent the strongest possible message to political leaders ahead of the climate change talks in Copenhagen.
The family-friendly march, organised by the Stop Climate Chaos coalition, demonstrated the concern felt by ordinary people that the world leaders should deliver a climate change deal that is fair, ambitious and binding.
Cheltenham Friends of the Earth were there, travelling en-mass on a coach organised by our member Jonathan Whittacker. The route of the march took us from outside the American Embassy, past Piccadilly and Trafalgar Square all the way to Westminster, where the march encircled Parliament on both sides of the river.
We all enjoyed the day, particularly the children who thought that the facepaint and whistle blowing was so much fun. They used up so much energy blowing whistles that they had to be carried some of the way from Grosvenor Square to Parliament.
