Projected carbon impact of the Derby Waste Treatment Facility

From the SINFIN, SPONDON AND ALL AGAINST INCINERATION campaign group, who were sent the following email from RRS - now owned by Shanks

In a message dated 14/10/2009:

--------------------------------------------------

Dear Mr Bacon,

Apologies for the delay in responding to your email, but I have liaised with Energos to ascertain the information you required. Please attached a paper that was produced by the Executive Committee of IEA Bioenergy, which you might find useful.

It shows the projected carbon impact (when displacing coal derived electricity) of the plant is between 1982kg and 694kg CO2 per tonne MSW processed.

The difference in the figures is based on the CH4 produced if the MSW was landfilled and there is no landfill gas collection and utilisation, and the lower figure used if 80% of the LFG is recovered and used.

With regards to an estimate of the CO2 figure for the Derby Waste Treatment Facility, Derby (3 lines at 6 tph operating for 7,800 hours) nominally treats 140,000 tpa of waste at 11.7 MJ/kg.

For the purposes of this calculation, Energos has assumed that the CV = 12.8 MJ/kg which would give a moisture content 20% wt and 42% wt Carbon dry waste. This yields, 140,000,000 * 0.8 * 0.42 * 44/12 = 172 480 000 kg CO2 per year, i.e. 172,000 tpa of CO2 per annum.

If you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact me,

Kind regards Jackie Nally, PPS Group On behalf of Resource Recovery Solutions (Derbyshire) Ltd

--------------------------------------------------

As people in Derby are now forced to throw currently composted foodwaste into the blackbin (supposed to be for residuals) instead of composting at Vital Earth through the brown bin recycling collections AND paper, card and plastics (LEADING TO MORE NITROGEN DIOXIDE AND DIOXIN EMISSIONS) are now being contaminated by glass shards through being collected with glass in the blue bin, the figure of 172,000 tonnes of CO2 can safely be doubled AT LEAST.

More figures shortly when we work out the tonnages of items that will be contaminated and multiply them to obtain CO2 tonnages.

Yet the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change scientists warn us to STOP producing more CO2. The Derby/Derbyshire plans lock us into producing MORE CO2, (plus dioxin, nitrogen dioxide, Deaths Brought Forward)
