Friends of the Earth > Local Groups > Havering
Does it annoy you that we throw away so many plastic containers here in Havering? We think the Council could do a lot more to tackle this growing problem. We have held a meeting with Havering's Cabinet Member for the Environment but are not satisfied with excuses not to do more. We are now planning our next move which will be to put pressure on Havering's decision makers. We need help with researching the issues and people who can write letters and emails to lobby our local politicians. We also need fresh ideas about how to move forward. Let's try to make wasteful packaging a thing of the past!
This is a local campaign we have initiated, and we know a lot of people feel the seem way because you spoke to us at the Havering Show in 2011. Before we started this campaign we took part in one of Friends of the Earth's national days of action asking David Cameron to 'Talk half as much rubbish'. There is a picture of our press stunt on this page. The national Friends of the Earth campaign aimed to reduce black bag rubbish by half by 2020; by reducing packaging and establishing better re-use and recycling facilities. The campaign coincided with the Government's review of Waste, and in summer 2011 they published the results of the review. Sadly the overall household waste recycling target is still only 50%. This is the EU legal minimum that the last Government was considering raising.
If you have any thoughts on this issue let us know, or if you really believe Havering could recycle more come along to one of our meetings and join in!
