Bee World planting - 12th April 2013

As part of the 'Bee Cause' campaign for better protection for our bees, national Friends of the Earth decided to fund 60 'Bee Worlds' across the country. We were lucky enough to win the bid to plant a meadow of bee-friendly flowers on the corner of Melton Road and Troon Way in Leicester. Leicester City Council and the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust helped us to prepare the ground and national Friends of the Earth provided the seeds. A group of volunteers turned up on 12th April to rake over the soil and sow the seed.

Local MP, Keith Vaz, and Deputy Mayor for Leicester, Piara Singh Clair, came to help sow some seeds and support our call for the Government to introduce a national bee action plan. The event received a lot of media coverage: our media officer was interviewed by Radio Leicester in the morning and it was covered in the Leicester Mercury and on the BBC website.

We will be visiting the meadow again in a couple of months and if you'd like to get involved please contact us. Let's hope the buzz (groan) encourages people to plant bee-friendly flowers in their own gardens!
