About us

When and where?

Our regular full group meeting is at 7pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Green Fish Resource Centre on Oldham Street (on the right just after Hilton Street if you're walking from Piccadilly Gardens).

We also hold monthly sub-group meetings for each of our campaigns, also at 7pm at Green Fish - check our website for the dates of the next meetings: http://www.manchesterfoe.org.uk.

About this group

The group consists entirely of volunteers, and our campaigns are funded entirely by membership, individual donations and charitable grants. We currently have around 120 paid-up members, and 20 to 25 active volunteers, though we're always on the lookout for more!

Membership isn't compulsory, but if you do decide to join for the paltry sum of £1.50 a month (or even less if you're unwaged or low-waged), you not only get a copy of our quarterly newsletter, Act!on, but also a membership card which entitles you to special discounts at a range of local ethical businesses.

Geographically, we mostly cover the Manchester, Trafford, Salford and Tameside areas, with neighbouring local groups in Bolton, Bury, Oldham and Stockport.

We campaign on a range of local, national and international issues, including:

  • Climate change: helping to build public support and lobby MPs to make sure we get an effective Climate Change Bill that will make sure the UK does its bit to stop dangerous climate change
  • Real food: promoting locally produced, organic and Fairtrade food in Manchester through our Real Food Guide website (www.realfoodguide.org.uk);
  • Trade & corporates: lobbying for fairer trade rules and corporate responsibility, and developing an Ethical Shopping Guide for Greater Manchester in partnership with our neighbouring groups;
  • Transport: fighting for better provision for cyclists though our award-winning Love Your Bike campaign (www.loveyourbike.org), and fighting against the proposed expansion of Manchester Airport;
  • Waste & recycling: working with local pubs and restaurants to encourage them to recycle more, and highlighting the problems of excessive packaging at supermarkets.
