Reducing food waste

In the UK, 7.2 million tonnes of food and drink are thrown away every year. If we all stopped throwing away food that could have been eaten, it would be the equivalent CO2 impact as taking 1 in 5 cars off the road.

MK FOE members are taking an active role in reducing the amount of food wasted. Members attended the Love Food Hate Waste Workshop (hosted by the Waste & Resource Action Programme) in April at Coffee Hall, Milton Keynes.

At the workshop, group members and others learned the background and issues surrounding food waste, tips on how best to store food, advice on portion planning and making use of leftovers, how to save money on their grocery bill, and how to engage others in the reduction of food.

Further details on the Love Food Hate Waste Campaign can be found at: http://england.lovefoodhatewaste.com

MK FOE has been spreading the messages of the Love Food Hate Waste Campaign at the Recycle for Your Community Fun Days in Coffee Hall and Netherifield this summer. There was a Love Food Hate Waste Roadshow at the events, as well as recycling artwork from Festive Road, a Bring and Buy Sale and more.

Our members further promoted the campaign at Network Rail's World Environment Day, and at one of Transition MK's events this summer.
