About us

When and where?

The formation of North Tyneside Friends of the Earth was inspired by founder members Les Price and Stu Morland, who sent letters to all North Tyneside national FoE members to see if there was interest in a local group. Out of that exercise a meeting was arranged at North Shields YMCA, and the group was founded in March 2004. Since then we have grown to a paying membership of more than 40, of whom 12 to 15 are active in Friends of the Earth campaigns at a local and national level.

We meet on the last Tuesday of the month at St Paul's Church community hall in Whitley Bay at 7.30pm.

On the third Saturday of the month at the Farmers' Market Day in Tynemouth Metro station we hold a stall. From this we sell locally-packed organic food, such as cereals and beans; we also raise funds for the RSPB and the Bumble Bee Conservation Trust by selling their badges. The stall displays leaflets about the environment and we often have campaign cards or petitions to sign. A fund raising raffle is held every three or four months to fund our campaigning, some of which involves providing resources for schools, or for members of the public to join in. Outside activities include regular bird-watching sessions run by RSPB member Tim Watson.

Since our inauguration we have organised three 'Green Festivals' at Whitley Bay and Tynemouth Metro stations, which were all successful. We have been represented every year at the national FoE conference, and have been active members of Marinet, the marine information network of FoE, since it was reorganised.

Please see our campaigns section to see which areas the group are actively working on. If you would like to get involved, or wish to support our work by becoming a member, please contact us.
