Borough plan and countryside gold rush for Developers

When and where?

We meet on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Crown Inn, Bond Street, Nuneaton at 7.15pm and the we are joined by others for Nuneaton Green Drinks at 8pm. Green Drinks is open to anyone interested in environmental/sustainability issues such as Nuneaton Transition and Green Party.

We always have lively discussions on a wide variety of environmental issues - everyone is always welcome!

About this group

Nuneaton & District Friends of the Earth was formed in 1991. It exists to serve the communities of Nuneaton & Bedworth, North Warwickshire and Hinckley & Bosworth boroughs.

We provide local people with the latest information on the widest range of regional, national and worldwide environmental issues. We also exist to help local people have their say about local environmental needs, drawing upon the national resources of the organisation to provide authoritative solutions to local problems. We have close links with other Friends of the Earth groups throughout the Midlands.

If you live in the area and are interested in environmental matters you should be a member of Nuneaton Friends of the Earth! We are a very active group but need more members so that we can campaign on a wider range of issues.

Never has it been so important to campaign. The local green spaces are under threat of further development. Our air is being polluted from increasing traffic levels. Local Public transport is poor compared to other towns. Big supermarkets are causing our local shops and farms to close. Our food is sourced from far away. It may be genetically modified and contain dangerous chemicals.

The group is making real progress on influencing the powers that control our lives. We are looking to recruit more members as the more active members that we have, the greater the pressure that we can exert. We are well known at all levels to local politicians.

We have worked for 5 years to stop a new incinerator being built in Coventry & Warwickshire. This has led to the scrapping of a billion pound PFI project and will result in higher recycling in the county. It is expected that around £15 million pounds will be saved each year after 2016 now the project is dead.

We continue to work on food issues. Sustainable farming needs to be supported rather than factory farming. Changes to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) at European level are taking place. We will continue to lobby at European and governmental level to help acheive these changes.

We look at local planning applications and comment when appropriate.

We also need to improve local transport, particularly the high bus fares, which deter people from using public transport. We will continue to work with the Rail users group to fight for improved train services. Better co-ordination between the different transport authorities is needed. We also want improved cycle routes around the town and between the neighbouring towns.

We have actively campaigned on climate change and renewable energy, taking part in national days of action on these issues. We are keen to support suitable renewable energy projects in the area.

After much campaigning, plastic and cardboard recycling collections were added to the doorstep collections in Nuneaton and Bedworth borough in April 2008. A more simplified system for collecting doorstep recycling started at the end of October 2011 and household food waste collections are due to strat in October 2012. We will continue to campaign to have better recycling available to schools and businesses and also to flats/maisonettes.

We have had stalls at Nuneaton market and the Camp Hill Festival as well as with the other Warwickshire groups at the Godiva Festival in Coventry and the Leamington Peace Festival and the Small is.... Festival at Bourton on Dunsmore.
