Emissions fall in Haringey

Carbon dioxide emissions have fallen by 11% per person in Haringey, according to figures just released by the government. The figures are part of a national report issued each year which started in 2005, with an 18-month time lag, so the figures just released are for 2009.

Total emissions from the borough have fallen from 1,047,000 tonnes in 2005 to 934,900 tonnes in 2009. At the same time population has risen slightly, so emissions per person have fallen from 4.7 tonnes to 4.2 tonnes. Emissions due to road traffic, domestic gas and electricity use and commercial gas use all saw reductions. Emissions from commercial electricity use have increased since 2005, although they also saw a big drop between 2008 and 2009.

Undoubtedly the combination of recession and higher petrol, gas and electricity prices has been a major factor, but the gradual improvements in public transport, in vehicle efficiency and in home energy efficiency have all played a part too.

The fact that emissions have fallen significantly shows that we can make rapid progress towards our goal of a 40% cut by 2020. We must ensure that reductions are locked in by much faster home improvements, local renewable generation and encouraging people to walk and cycle for shorter distances.
