Living Memorial to Ken Saro-Wiwa comes to the Bernie Grant Arts Centre

During February the ground-breaking, oil-industry-busting Living Memorial to Ken Saro-Wiwa is on show at its newest venue, the Bernie Grant Arts Centre (BGAC) in Tottenham.

Ken Saro-Wiwa was an inspirational Nigerian campaigner against the environmental damage caused in Nigeria by the multinational petroleum industry, particularly Shell. He was hanged in 1995 by the military government on charges widely regarded as entirely politically motivated and completely unfounded.

The Living Memorial, created by artist Sokari Douglas Camp CBE is a hand-welded, steel sculpture of a Nigerian-style bus; a symbol of collective action and a site of creative dissidence. The sculpture throws a spotlight on the impacts of oil on the Ogoni people of the Niger Delta.

Remember Saro-Wiwa will be collaborating with the BGAC throughout 2011 on the issues and stories behind the Living Memorial.
