Busking bear promotes energy campaign

Waltham Forest Friends of the Earth joined in a local art festival in a unique way - with a busking polar bear.

The group took part in the seventh annual E17 Arts Trail - an artist led project which showcases work from the borough's artists and makers.

The group have beeen involved with the trail since it started in 2004 and have staged numerous exhibitions of environmental works by local artists. Former MP for Harry Cohen once notably donated his original painting on the subject of global warming.

For the last two years the Rose and Crown pub in Walthamstow has set up its own version of Anthony Gormley's 'Fourth Plinth' project - creating a space for people to have their 15 minutes of fame.

Last year the group's Coordinator Helen used her time on the plinth to promote the Food Chain campaign. This year new member Alan volunteered to wear a polar bear costume and play guitar.

"I couldn't see much of what was happening and it was so hot inside but it was worthwhile with all the interest we got. Maybe I should go on tour!"

Working the crowd

Despite the rain the busking bear drew quite a crowd and much applause. The group took the opportunity to collect peoples' thoughts on energy use and handed out surveys as part of the Big Energy Conversation.

The group plan to continue collecting surveys at the upcoming Leytonstone Car Free Festival later in the month.
