Neighbourhood Energy Savings Toolkit Event

NEST is a fun, interactive and educational event organised by Wandsworth Friends of the Earth and St Marks Church to provide practical guidance to the citizens of Wandsworth Borough on how to make their homes energy efficient.

The event was held on 12th November at St Marks Church, Battersea. It was attended by a collection of people from across the borough interested in environmental issues and guests, Jane Ellison MP and members of Wandsworth Borough council.

Warm-Up: Climate Conversations Board Game - Liz Darley, Transition Town Tooting
- Carbon Conversations started as a project at Cambridge Carbon Footprint. Aware that the factors that stop people engaging with difficult subjects like climate change tend to be psychological and social rather than practical, they set about creating a project that would help people past these defences rather than reinforce them.
- Liz ran multiple sessions of an interactive board game on energy reduction in the home designed to promote discussion amongst participants on how they can reduce the carbon footprint of their house

Welcome and Introduction - Paul Perkin, Vicar, St. Mark's Church

Overview of Impacts of High Energy Prices & Climate Change Globally - Helen Heather, Campaigner, Tearfund
- Tearfund is a Christian international aid and development agency working globally to end poverty and injustice, and to restore dignity and hope in some of the world's poorest communities.
- Helen spoke about the impact of climate change on people in developing countries

Draught-Busting and Energy in the Community - Hugo Schonbeck, Hyde Farm CAN
- Hugo, a committee member of Hyde Farm Climate Action Network, spoke about 'draughtbusting' an initiative they pioneered to demonstrate the techniques they have developed to insulate Edwardian homes to local residents.

Balham Eco House - Less energy: more comfort -Achieving 80% carbon reduction in old houses - Susan Venner, Venner Lucas Architects
- Susan Venner is an award winning architect specialising in low energy and sustainable design. She spoke about the 80% house, a Victorian house refurbished to reduce carbon emissions by 80% - the government agreed target regarded necessary to limit global warming to +2 deg C. The objective of which was to prove that this order of reduction can be achieved in old houses.

Solar Panels & Solar Thermal -- Taking Advantage of the Feed in Tariff - Akta Raja, Greentomatoenerg
- Akta spoke about the Feed in Tariff and how home owners can take advantage of it to reduce their energy builds
