Fix the Food Chain - change the deal behind our meal

The Food Chain campaign is about revolutionising the way that the meat we eat is produced. We want to see the Government change the deal behind our meals by shifting subsidies to support small, sustainable planet-friendly famring and supporting farmers to grow their own food.

Why do we need to do this?

Watch a brief film about the campaign. Animals in British factory farms are fed huge amounts of protein to make them grow as fast as possible. Following the BSE crisis lots of this protein comes from soy, imported from South America. There, precious habitats like rainforests are cleared to make way for vast soy plantations. Destroying these forests increases climate-changing gases in the atmosphere. Small scale farmers, forced off their land by soy plantations, are now unable to grow food for their families.

The industry is pulling the plug on the Earth's free life-support systems - which provide us with clean water, healthy soil and air that we can breathe.

The global chain also fails UK farmers, leaving them vulnerable to fluctuating international commodity prices, rather than being able to use locally grown foods for their animals.

What are we doing this year?

This year we are calling on local MPs to sign a parliamentary petition on Deforestation, Climate Change and Livestock, Early Day Motion 194 . We are also calling on candidates standing in the forthcoming general election to ask for a committment to making the UK livestock industry sustainable to be included in their party`s election manifesto.

We are also raising awareness about the issue amongst the public, organising a public meeting and discussion on 'The Future of Food' and talking and holding stalls at films and in town.

Later this year we will be lobbying MPs to support new legislation to make the livestock industry sustainable. More information about this campaign can be found in a new report called`Eating the Planet? How we can feed the world without trashing it'.
