Brill CE Combined School
5 May 2010

Brill is a rural primary school with 170 pupils.  It is well known locally for conservation work.

Energy saving

Head teacher, Chris Hirst, wanted to reduce the school's carbon output. The school now has:

  • two wind turbines
  • energy saving light switches
  • room sensors
  • an energy monitoring system.

The energy saved helps keep the school's swimming pool open for the whole community to use.

Green learning

The school also has an organic garden and a teaching pond. Teacher Marie-Claire Nixon-Davingoff believes:

To learn about the environment, you have to experience it... [we use] the outdoor classroom in all curriculum areas.

The pupils also use databases, library research and the internet to learn about environmental issues.

We have lots of places to help us to learn... there is always something new to find out
