Wildlife in trouble5 May 2010
In November 2005, the UK Government published its Company Law Reform Bill which will come into effect in 2006.
This Bill protects company profits but not the environment and habitats of several animals from the affects of companies.
Friends of the Earth wants companies to be made more transparent, responsible, and accountable to protect these animals.
What use are animals anyway?
- An important link in the ecosystem
- The trade in animals results from their use for medicinal, beauty, and entertainment purposes.
- Animals have the right to live for future generations.
- Protecting wildlife is our responsibility.
Problem
There are more than 7200 endangered animal species worldwide.
Animals are endangered because of:
![]() |
Habitat destruction caused by demand for land and resources. The orang-utan and the Sumatran tiger are highly endangered. Their forests are being cut down to make way for palm oil plantations. The oil is in high demand as it is found in 1 in 10 food products, including chocolate and bread. |
Trade in animal parts for medicines, skins, pets, ornaments, and food.
The coat of the chiru makes a very rich wool which has now left this animal highly endangered.
The story so far ...

It can be difficult to get involved in helping protect endangered animals. Many animals are poached and little can be done.
However, companies are increasing demand for products like palm oil, which cause habitat destruction. They should be made more responsible.
Also, people who buy products like the chiru wool shawls are further endangering these animals.
You can help
- Learn as much as you can about these animals to identify the different threats.
- Raise awareness - tell your friends and family what you have found out.
- Adopt an animal
