Question time
5 May 2010

Ever wanted to pin a politician down and grill them with questions?

Students at St Colm's High School in Draperstown, Northern Ireland, did just that in the grand finale to their Shout about week.

After a thought-provoking week exploring climate solutions they were bursting with questions. And Mr Patsy Mc Glone, Chair of Northern Ireland's Environment Committee, was their target.

The questions came thick and fast...

...and if he tried to avoid answering (as politicians are sometimes known to do), the students didn't let him get away with it.

The pupils have demonstrated a more complete understanding of the issue of climate change than a few politicians I could mention!

Mr Patsy Mc Glone

He was so impressed that he's putting one of their suggestions to the Environment Committee.

I asked Mr Mc Glone about making it easier to get planning permission for a new house if it was eco-friendly. I would feel very proud if my suggestion was taken on board.

Pupils walk to school during the Shout about weekThe whole school was left buzzing about the experience.

They even decided to ditch the lift and walk to school to reduce their own carbon footprint.

We thought the resource was brilliant. Shout about 2009 epitomised the science and citizenship elements of 'caring for our world' in the Northern Ireland curriculum.
