The day I met Tony Blair
I lay in bed and let a nervous feeling spread over me. What is it I thought? Then it struck me. I'm meeting the Prime Minister!
Rebecca Verlander
Friends of the Earth arranged for six young people to meet Tony Blair and hand him The Big Ask postcards from over 150,000 people. Rebecca was one of them.
Rebecca's report:
I was very keen to do this because it was a fantastic opportunity to tell Tony Blair what my friends and I think.
10.00am
As we walked down Downing Street cameras flashed. It was like we were movie stars. After a wait we were led into the Cabinet Room.
10.20am
Tony came in and greeted us. I got to speak first.
We are all here because we are concerned that not enough is being done to tackle climate change. We do our bit to reduce CO2 emissions and now it's time to do your bit too.
Tony Blair said he was concerned too, and talked about the problems of cutting UK emissions if other polluting countries, like America, didn't cut theirs.
I told him that we can't tell other countries to do their bit if we're not doing ours.
10.40am
Our time was up. Tony Blair was very polite and seemed concerned. I hope he introduces this law.
The result? The Government has introduced a Climate Change Bill which will become law in 2008. The involvement of Rebecca along with over 200,000 people helped do that. Friends of the Earth are now battling to make it into a law that is as strong as possible.
Meeting the Prime Minister and asking him to act on climate change was amazing
Add your voice to Rebecca's and push for the Climate Change Bill to be made is as strong as possible before it becomes law.
