10 reasons to get composting

Still not convinced of the benefits? Read on ...

1: Less impact

Composting reduces the environmental impact of having to dispose of organic waste.

2: Less in landfill

Organic material can form up to 1/3 of our weekly waste. Without composting most of this goes straight to landfill. Composting minimises our landfill waste and recycles it back into our gardens.

3: Less methane

Organic waste which is dumped in landfill rather than composted stagnates and produces methane - a potent greenhouse gas.

4: Better soil

Compost can improve soil structure and increase its fertility.

5: Save peat bogs

Composting reduces the need for materials such as peat and fertilisers.

6: Save water

Compost locks moisture into the soil, enabling gardeners to water less and to cope with the hose pipe bans.

7: Educate your kids

Composting allows children to play an active part in recycling and enables them to see the entire cycle, from food scrapings and organic waste to the creation of something new and useful.

8: Easy

Composting can be successful at any level, from multi-acre hi-tech commercial sites to simple backyard bins.

9: Cheap

Many local authorities now subsidise cheap or free compost bins for local residents. They also provide collection schemes in many areas.

10: Fun

Composting is fun and very satisfying.
