Short cuts to greener working

If you drive to work, try leaving your car at home one day a week and walking, cycling or catching the bus or train to work instead. Find out what your firm thinks of flexitime - it may make the commute easier.

  1. If you work in manufacturing, contact the Carbon Trust to see how you could cut the energy costs of your business.
  2. If you work in an office, add the slogan "Think before you print" at the bottom of your emails. Switch to roller towels rather than paper towels in the loos. Check out Twig for details about the most sustainable paper and printing options.
  3. If you are worried about waste at work, contact Envirowise to find out how to reduce your rubbish.
  4. If you work in the hospitality or agricultural industries, check the Environment Agency website for ways to cut your water use.
  5. If you work at home, use the warmest, sunniest room in the house as your workroom.
  6. Anyone who works should check http://www.recycledproducts.org.uk/ to see if you can use recycled products at work.
  7. Donate your unwanted office furniture to Green-works, who will distribute it to schools, charities, community groups and start-up businesses that need it.
