Livia Firth and the green carpet

Looking through red carpet pictures from the glamorous Golden Globes recently, one stopped me in my tracks.

There was a picture of Livia Firth, wife of actor Colin Firth and star in her own right, wearing the most beautiful Armani dress made from...plastic bottles.

Apparently, the unstoppable Mrs Firth had somehow managed to convince one of the biggest design houses in the world to create her a gown using a special fabric made with fibres derived from the mechanical, non-chemical recycling of plastic bottles. Having achieved this, she then wore it to one of the world's biggest award ceremonies, alongside her much-photographed husband.

Nice work Livia.

The lovely eco-queen has been wearing sustainable dresses on the red carpet since 2010 and this year marks the third year of her Green Carpet Challenge.

And how she's risen to the challenge. In the past two years she's hit the red carpet wearing a range of gorgeous dresses.

In 2010 she was snapped wearing an adjusted second-hand wedding dress, sweetly accessorised by her mother's earrings. Then in 2011 when Colin won his Best Actor Oscar for 'The King's Speech', Livia proudly stood beside him wearing a dress made from 10 damaged vintage dresses, all from the same era as the film. Fabulous.

Thankfully Livia is not alone in her quest for sustainable fashion. Hurrah for the Duchess of Cambridge and actress Carey Mulligan, who've both *gasp* worn the same dress in public more than once. Hurrah for a host of other celebrities designing their own sustainable ranges or choosing to wear eco-fashion.

And hurrah for Livia and her Green Carpet Challenge. Thank goodness ethical fashion is no longer reserved for hemp hoodies.
