Happy Mondays: pricey petrol

A tongue-in-cheek look at recent news that's caught our eye. This week, how to cope with pumped up fuel prices.

What is it?

Expensive. Oil prices recently topped US$140 dollars a barrel and may rise further.

You may soon need mortgage advice before filling up at the petrol station.

What's not to like?

Moneywise, there's not much to smile about - especially if you live in a rural area and rely on
road transport.

What's to like?

The good news is that there are a few ways to beat the price squeeze.

Choosing an economical car that produces low carbon emissions is kinder to your wallet and the planet.

If you only need a car every now and then joining a car club may save you cash.

A better option is to use public transport, such as trains and buses, if it is available - making even more carbon savings.

Where possible, the cheapest and greenest way to get about is on foot or by bicycle.

If you think you can manage your daily commute by pedal power, you'll avoid price hikes and stay fit.
