A woodburner or open fire produces plenty of ash that can be used to kindle life in your garden. Added to flower and vegetable beds, ash will enrich soil with potassium, phosphates, iron, copper and zinc. Spread on topsoil, it will also deter hungry slugs. A word of caution, however - ash will increase the alkalinity of soil, so use sparingly unless your plants are suitable for alkaline areas.
