New Coalition Fights for Five Year Freeze on GM Foods
16 February 1999

Campaigners unveiled a giant ice cube containing five fish "mutated" with maize opposite the House of Commons at the launch of a new coalition against GM crops and foods.

The coalition of 29 consumer, development, health and environment organisations, including Friends of the Earth, is calling for a five-year freeze on the growing of genetically modified (GM) crops for any commercial purpose; on the import of GM foods and farm crops; and on the patenting of genetic resources for food and farm crops.

As well as Friends of the Earth, the coalition includes ActionAid, Christian Aid, Greenpeace, the World Development Movement, the Wildlife Trusts, the Townswomen's Guild, and supermarket chain Iceland Foods. "Five years gives us all time to make informed decisions," said Campaign Co-ordinator Sandra Bell.
