Lancet to publish Pusztai's GM food research4 October 1999
After months of speculation about the work of the scientist who was sacked for saying that genetically modified (GM) food was bad for rats, the UK's leading journal for medical science looks set to publish his research.
Welcoming the news that research by Dr Arpad Pusztai on GM food was soon to be published in the Lancet, Pete Riley, Food Campaigner at Friends of the Earth said: "We are delighted that Dr Pusztai's work on GM food will finally be published in a peer reviewed scientific journal. Jack Cunningham, Sir Robert May and all the other politicians, officials and scientists who tried to rubbish Dr Pusztai, and his work, owe him a sincere and public apology.
Scientific concerns about the safety of GM foods are clearly real. This is why the Government should call a five-year freeze on GM food so that more comprehensive research into this new technology can take place."
