GM study highlights need for urgent rethink over GM crops18 June 2003
A new study by scientists at the Université de Lille in France and published in Proceedings B, a Royal Society journal, warns that GM material can be spread over many miles by farm vehicles or by getting stuck to people's shoes. The author of the paper, Dr Jean-Francois Arnaud says, "Our findings are consistent with the hypothesis of human-mediated long-distance dispersal."
"This research shows once again that we are still only beginning to learn about the potential long term impacts of GM crops on the environment," Friends of the Earth's GM Campaigner, Pete Riley. "It also shows that human activity plays a significant role in spreading GM material over long distances. There must now be a major re-think on the impacts that GM crops may have on our food, farming and environment. The Government must take note and refuse to allow GM crops to be commercially grown in the UK".
