A question of waste
6 May 2010

Derby Friends of the Earth have been encouraging local people to tell their councils that they don't want waste incinerators. They've had some fantastic success on this community-based campaign over the past year.

In March, Derby City Council's Planning Committee turned down the second of two proposed incinerators in the city, the first having been rejected in December. The Derby group is now arguing that the City and County Waste Strategy also needs to rule out incineration. Another incinerator is already being proposed in Chesterfield.

To help get the message across, the group sent out letters to local Friends of the Earth supporters asking them to reply to the Councils' online survey saying that they don't want incineration in Derbyshire.

The letter included Friends of the Earth's arguments against waste incineration as well as alternatives to help people respond to the survey. The group also encouraged people to directly contact the council and voice their opinions on incineration. The Council has asked for responses by the end of May 2010.

All Friends of the Earth groups can write to national supporters in their area to promote their campaigns or invite them to events like public meetings and film screenings. Could your group take advantage of this opportunity?
