Election opportunities for new laws
22 April 2010

The General Election will be taking place on 6 May 2010.

After the election there'll be a ballot of MPs. Known as a 'Private Members Ballot' this will give the selected MPs a chance to table their own legislation.

Strong track-record

Friends of the Earth has had big successes using these ballots to push for new environmental laws.

This year, with a new Parliament in place, we'll have another big opportunity to push for new legislation.

Fixing the food chain

The Food Chain campaign is calling for a new law to overhaul the UK's livestock system.

Factory farming currently relies on huge imports of soy from South America for animal feed.

This industrial-scale production of soy is causing:

  • Deforestation
  • Climate-changing emissions
  • Displacement of local communities

A new law - based on a Bill recently presented to Parliament - would reduce the UK's reliance on imported feeds and promote home-grown alternatives.

It would also create a fairer deal for farmers and consumers.

Getting serious about CO2

The Get Serious About CO2 campaign is calling for every council to do its bit to tackle climate change.

Depending on the outcome of the General Election, the campaign may also be pushing for legislation through the ballot.

We'll be updating this with more information after 6 May.

Swinging into action

The Ballot is likely to take place on Thursday 3 June. Selected MPs will then have 20 days to decide which legislation to table.

During this time we'll be asking for your help to persuade these MPs to take up our proposed bills.
