Friends of the Earth is 40 and I've been talking to some of the supporters who've made it all possible. Musician KT Tunstall (right) says it's hard being green when you're on tour.

Tell us about the touring

"Being a touring musician is not an eco-friendly job.

I've tried hard to reduce the carbon and waste from my tours and the production of my music.

"I always use eco-responsible companies where I can.

"A friend started an eco-refurbishment and building company and ended up building me a solar-powered studio. It's called Mr Wolf Inc - named after Harvey Keitel's character in the film Pulp Fiction.

"But most of the time you're dealing with people who don't care about the environment at all.

"Consumption and waste seem to be the root of most environmental problems."

How would you change things?

"I would like to see a sincere effort by the Government to push the development of electric cars, for example. All the technology is there, and it would be a huge step away from the toxic relationship we have with oil dependency."

What about at home?

"It's easier to be green in my personal life as I'm less reliant on other people.

"I have completely greened my flat in London. And I spend as much time as possible in wellies. You know it's a good day if you've got your wellies on."

Next week: Dave Dayes. To see all the supporters I've interviewed, visit our 40th anniversary gallery.
