Act for the Arctic
11 May 2011

Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) has issued a statement calling on world leaders to act to protect the Arctic from climate change.

In the Arctic, temperatures are rising twice as fast as elsewhere, threatening:

  • Local communities
  • Ecosystems, and the
  • Natural environment.

The area is in danger of becoming another victim of the climate crisis.

The statement calls on world leaders to act now to:

  • Make sure the richest nations cut emissions
by at least 40% by 2020 compared to 1990 levels.
  • Establish a precautionary approach
to regional development and all economic activities in the Arctic.
  • Bring in a moratorium on all oil and gas
    extraction in the Arctic.
  • Respect the rights and welfare of indigenous communities.

The statement warns that increasing temperatures are already affecting Arctic fish stocks, seabird populations and onshore species.

Strong environmental standards must be established in the Arctic to conserve biodiversity and halt climate change.
