Earth Summit... 1 July 2002
With less than two months to go before the Earth Summit starts, community groups across South Africa have begun work on a massive installation for use by Friends of the Earth International during the talks.
Local artists with an array of figure designs
The sculpture - entitled Hear Our Voice - will be composed of 10,000 paper mache figures clustered around a corporate giant. It will be a powerful message to world leaders - Don't let big business rule the world.
Close up of figure design
Each figure will represent one hundred of the thousands of people who can't attend the Summit but are concerned about the activities of multinational corporations.
Local people will gain new skills from the project
The sculpture will be accompanied by a soundscape of natural sounds and some of the messages people have sent.
