Brands team-up to tackle Bangka problems
23 September 2013

Following pressure from Friends of the Earth supporters, leading phone brands are working on solving the urgent problems on Bangka Island.

After admitting using Bangka tin in their smartphones, major mobile phone brands have rushed to join a group tackling the situation on Bangka.

The group includes representatives from the Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH) and the Electronics Industry Citizenship Coalition (ElCC).

With Friends of the Earth's input, the Bangka Tin Working Group is discussing urgent action to tackle Bangka's problems.

A statement outlining the group's purpose and objectives is now available and they expect to publish recommendations around the end of 2013.

'Make It Better' law

While it's great so many brands have signed up to the group, their discussions remain behind closed doors.

The process isn't transparent and it doesn't guarantee any results for the people of Bangka.

Make It Better is calling for a strong EU law to make companies come clean about the full impact of their products.
