Annual coastline clean-up1 October 2010
West Cornwall Friends of the Earth and Bude Friends of the Earth were just two of our local groups who helped with the Marine Conservation Society's annual beach clean and survey.
Mary Whibley, Coordinator of Bude Friends of the Earth, tells us more about their day out in September:
Once again our local group took part in the Marine Conservation Society's annual survey. A total of 1575 non-natural items were recorded this year. This was fewer than in 2009, but considering that the beaches are cleaned every day, it's still an enourmous amount.
Fishing associated debris - plastic line, netting, rope, cord and pieces of plastic are still the main debris found, and are still at record levels.
We'd like to say thanks to the beach rangers who let us borrow equipment and also to the 'Life's a Beach' cafe at Summerleaze who provided excellent food and drinks for the volunteers at the end of a hard day's work!
