Wind power campaign success in Bedfordshire
27 March 2012

Hard work in support of renewable energy by South Bedfordshire Friends of the Earth has paid off. Central Bedfordshire is set for its first wind farm after Biggleswade wind farm was finally given the go ahead.

When built, the windfarm will produce enough power for 11,000 homes. The ten turbines will be sited between the East Coast mainline railway and the A1 motorway.

Initial disappointment

The Co-operative Group's plans for the ten turbines were originally turned down by Central Bedfordshire Council last year.

But the developer received good news a year later when the Planning Inspectorate reversed this decision in January.

Local support

South Bedfordshire Friends of the Earth has campaigned in support of the windfarm since 2009. Group members worked hard to:

  • Thoroughly research the issue
  • Visit the site to assess things in person
  • Gather letters of support
  • Hold stalls at summer fayres
  • Counter the misinformation spread by anti-wind groups
  • Brief local councillors on the issue
  • Distribute leaflets and briefings
  • Add detailed information to the group's website
  • Attend and speak at planning meetings and a public enquiry

Expert witness

The group disagreed with the position taken by the Council over the potential noise impact. Members applied for funding to appoint their own consultant at the planning inquiry.

He produced a report which has helped resolve an issue affecting many wind farms across the country.

New skills

The planning inquiry was a steep learning curve for the group's Coordinator, Victoria.

She cross-examined the noise expert, gave evidence on the visual impact of the windfarm and was even cross-examined herself. But all her hard work paid off when the Planning Inspectorate made its ruling.

More than wind

The group is involved in lots of other issues in the community including encouraging recycling. The group was also recognised by the UK bus awards for helping improve public transport.
