To celebrate Friends of the Earth's 40th anniversary, I've been talking to some of the supporters who've made it all possible. Stanley Knill (right) is a volunteer at the head office in London.

"When I stopped teaching English as a foreign language, I had time on my hands and I didn't want to go back to college.

"Friends of the Earth spoke to me as something I could commit to. If I could be part of that, then I knew everything I did would be useful.

"I'm part of the campaign team working on UK climate issues and the Final Demand campaign.

"We want an enquiry into the dominance of the Big Six energy companies. We also want the Government to give proper support for renewable energy such as solar panels.

Recently we took the Government to court over the decision to cut support for renewable energy.

"I was there at the High Court with my suit on.

"I've now got some paid temporary work for Friends of the Earth - promoting the role of volunteers across the whole organisation."

Next week: John Crocker. To see all the supporters I interviewed, visit our 40th anniversary gallery.
