Friends of the Earth protestors staged a demonstration outside the Japanese Embassy in London today calling on the Japanese Government to ratify the Kyoto Protocol at the current Bonn talks.

The Kyoto Protocol was originally brokered by the Japanese - they have a key responsibility to make sure it does not fail. We must get a deal in Bonn |

A letter was handed to the Ambassador saying:
- Japan must state it will ratify the Protocol without the US if necessary
- Japan has an overriding responsibility to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions according to the targets and timetables agreed in Kyoto
- The US won't ratify the Protocol at this stage. Japan should seek US involvement after the Protocol has entered in force.
- Japan should "agree to disagree" with the US - like Europe has done
- The Japanese Environment Minister must have the authority to negotiate and agree upon environmentally effective rules in Bonn
