Vote for the environment
10 May 2010

Brent Friends of the Earth recently organised a special Eco Hustings in Willesden to focus on local and national environmental issues.

Despite the event clashing with the TV leaders' debate over eighty people attended and grilled local parliamentary candidates on their policies.

Just rewards

Four candidates faced questions from the public:

  • Sarah Teather - Liberal Democrats
  • Sachin Rajput - Conservatives
  • Dawn Butler - Labour
  • Shahrar Ali - Green Party

The group's press officer Viv Stein organised the event. She admitted that it was a lot of hard work but well worth it in the end.

Political backing

The group's work with several local parties really paid off. Both Sarah Teather and Shahrar Ali signed our election pledges before the hustings.

The group has achieved near cross party support for the Brent Cross coalition which Brent Friends of the Earth members set up.

The coalition opposes one of the largest developments in the country - plans for which have now been put on hold by the Secretary of State.

All on tape

The group filmed the hustings so they had a record of what the candidates said.

A great result

Feedback so far from the four candidates has been very positive.

The group was congratulated for organising the hustings and thanked for putting on such a well attended event.
