Burning our resources19 May 2009
The West Midlands has more municipal incinerators than any other English region.
With 5 plants in operation, you'd think the region had incinerators covered.
But there are plans for new burners in Shrewsbury, Telford, South Staffordshire and a new, larger plant in Coventry.
Friends of the Earth local groups and community activists are campaigning to stop these plans going ahead, including:
- Stalls
- Planning objections
- Postcards
- Websites
and public meetings.
We are also challenging them through our involvement with the regional planning blueprint - the Regional Spatial Strategy - which opened for public examination on 28 April 2009.
We will be outlining our thoughts for a cleaner, greener and leaner region as we debate the future plans for the region.
Issues we want to discuss include the numbers of new houses plus:
- Where people will live, work and travel
- The type, affordability and tenure of people's homes
- People's carbon footprints.
It is essential that we work towards a lower carbon region to meet the Climate Change Act 2008 requirements of cutting UK carbon dioxide emissions by 80% by 2050.
