Camden Gets Serious about CO2
20 April 2011

Successful campaigning by local activists has led Camden Council to pledge to cut the borough's CO2 emissions by 40% this decade.

Camden Friends of the Earth campaigned for the ambitious target, in line with the Committee on Climate Change recommendations, as part of the 'Get Serious about CO2' campaign.

A special report by sustainability experts Carbon Descent showed how Camden could slash its emissions through measures like insulating homes and switching to green power.

And it showed working with businesses and institutions is vital - their emissions account for 65% of Camden's total.

Government action needed

The report warned that uncertainty over the Government's climate change policy casts doubt on energy saving schemes getting the necessary funding.

And Deputy Leader of Camden Council and Cabinet Member for Sustainability Angela Mason emphasised the council needs Government help to reach the ambitious target.

A new law to help all councils

Councils facing tough spending choices need a clear message from Government that tackling climate change is something they must prioritise.

Friends of the Earth is calling for a new law to ensure all councils to do their bit to slash CO2 and ensure they get the money they need to do so.

Camden Council is the latest to sign our petition to Chris Huhne asking the Government to bring in this new law in its Energy Bill.
