Witney calls on Cameron to strengthen Energy Bill21 June 2011
Witney residents met with Prime Minister David Cameron last week to urge him to strengthen the Government's Energy Bill.
Members of Oxford Friends of the Earth joined forces with other local groups including Green TEA and Greenpeace for the lobby meeting.
Sarah Couch, Chair of Green TEA's Energy Committee, said:
A truly green Energy Bill would help councils and communities like Witney get on with things like insulating homes, fitting solar panels and improving public transport so we can all enjoy cheaper fuel bills and greater energy security.
In Witney nearly five thousand households are suffering from fuel poverty. Poor insulation means £1 in every £4 spent heating our homes is wasted.
A stronger Energy Bill will lead to:
- big cuts in climate-changing emissions
- warmer homes and cheaper fuel bills
- tens of thousands of new jobs.
It is crucial to get the Green Deal right and effective incentives such as the RHI and the Feed-in Tariff to bring about the much-needed increase in renewable energy.
David Cameron
The Prime Minister agreed to consider the need for new rules to ensure every council does its bit to tackle climate change in their area.
