Campaign success in Brighton

Brighton & Hove Friends of the Earth is the latest group to get some serious success in the Get Serious About CO2 campaign.

Brighton & Hove City Council has signed up to a 42% cut in emissions by 2020 and the group took quite a different route to achieve this excellent result.

One group member, Chris Todd, has been working on local environmental issues for many years and already had good contacts with council officers and members from all parties.

Chris is an active member of the Local Strategic Partnership (LSP) which is responsible for drawing up the Sustainable Community Strategy (SCS). He ensured that this Strategy included a target of 42% CO2 emissions reductions by 2020.

Chris reveals that it wasn’t all smooth sailing:

"As Vice-Chair of the LSP I ensured that the target was kept in the final strategy, as it mysteriously disappeared from one version of the draft.”

The Local Strategic Partnership launched the SCS in May. It aims:

“to achieve from a 2005 baseline of 5.53 tonnes per capita, a 12% reduction in City CO2 ‘direct’ emissions by 2012/13, a 42% reduction by 2020 and an 80% reduction by 2050.”
