Campaigners to meet Planning Minister
7 September 2011

Campaigners will meet the Planning Minister tomorrow
(8 Sept) over serious flaws in the Government's planning proposals.

Friends of the Earth's Policy and Campaigns Director Craig Bennett is attending the meeting. He will urge Greg Clark to amend the proposals - or face another fiasco like the outcry over forests.

The Government's current plans will do little to create affordable housing or new green industries and jobs.

Its proposals include a presumption in favour of sustainable development - with no legal definition of what that means. This threatens to give rise to a rash of new commercial development.

If the Government bulldozes through these short-sighted proposals it will create a building free-for-all that will blight our countryside with bad building - and stop the good building we need.

Craig Bennett, Friends of the Earth

Friends of the Earth is calling for:

  • A legal definition of sustainable development
to be enshrined in law through the current Localism Bill
  • Detailed guidance for local councils
to create green jobs, build affordable homes and protect the environment.

Claims that the Government is 'listening' were put into serious doubt this week when Chancellor George Osborne announced his 'determination to win this battle'.

Make them listen
