A typical day
3 December 2010

It was bound to strike eventually - a bout of sickness from inadvertently drinking some of the less-than-clean Cancun tap water.

For the sake of our stomachs bottled water is, unfortunately, order of the day here.

So yesterday I was resting up, hoping to be ready to re-enter the buzz and excitement of the Moon Palace Hotel, the venue of the climate talks, later today.

But, illness aside, what's a typical day really like at the negotiations?

The day kicks off with a morning meeting at 7am, when I join the communications team for an update, over toast and coffee, on the work we've been doing briefing the international media on the latest developments here.

Then at 8am everyone heads for the bus to the conference centre, an hour away down the narrow spit jutting out of the Yucatan peninsula and home to the non-descript high-rise hotels which characterise the resort.

Once we've arrived, and passed safely through security, it's time for our campaigners to discuss what's happening in the talks that day, set up meetings with negotiators and report back on any intelligence they've gleaned on the latest progress.

I also chat with the team which works with local campaigners on activities such as demonstrations outside the conference - but more on them in the next couple of days.

As a communications officer, I spend my day monitoring press conferences and working with campaigners to make sure Friends of the Earth's voice is represented publicly in Cancun, especially when there are significant developments.

Through drafting press statements and talking to journalists, it's my job to make sure our call for a strong and fair international agreement is heard loud and clear.

Around 7 or 8pm, we head back to our hotel at the Northern end of Cancun's tropical lagoon to reflect on the day's events.

So here's hoping I'll be back in action later today - and able to update you with some positive developments as we near the close of the first week of the negotiations.
