Aston Villa drives Birmingham group's car-free day - result
21 October 2010

22 September again saw Birmingham Friends of the Earth challenging the city's employers to free up the city's streets.

High-profile supporters flocked to join in international In Town Without My Car Day. Pick of the bunch was Aston Villa Football Club. Winger Marc Albrighton posed with a poster for the campaign designed by the group.

Birmingham City Council also got behind the event, encouraging staff to take part. Leading councillors pledged not to use their cars for the day. Local businesses including the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce also joined in.

Birmingham group member Rachna Shah learnt to ride a bike for the first time. See how she got on in this video.

On the day, Birmingham Friends of the Earth turned a city centre car parking space into a mini park complete with turf.

Local activists gave medals and free tea and coffee to car-free commuters. They also provided information about sustainable transport and how it could be easier for everyone to travel this way more often.
