Committee on Climate Change calls for faster, stronger action on rented homes
5 July 2011

The Government's own independent advisors on climate change have said the new minimum energy efficiency standard for rented homes should start before 2018.

In a report to Parliament, the Committee on Climate Change called for "earlier introduction of regulation for the private rented sector" and said:

The regulation would only apply to F and G rated properties and improvements would be relatively low-cost in most cases (i.e. loft and cavity wall insulation, new boilers). More ambitious regulation would cover a higher proportion of the housing stock and should be considered

Committee on Climate Change, 3rd Progress Report to Parliament

Homes that are badly insulated and poorly heated make people ill, contribute to climate change and cost a fortune to heat.

As a result of our campaign the Government has said they'll introduce a minimum standard of energy efficiency for rented homes from 2018.

This is welcome - but the new law is

  • too slow to start - 180 MPs back our call for a 2016 start
  • too weak - it doesn't cover letting agents or the marketing of cold rented homes
  • contains loopholes

Ask your MP to support amendments to the Energy Bill to set this right.
