Celebrating International Women's Day13 March 2013
Friends of the Earth celebrated International Women's Day in style.
We invited 3 inspiring female campaigners to share insights into their campaigning journeys:
- Ruth Davis (Greenpeace's Chief Policy Officer)
- Kat Banyard (UK Feminista founder)
- Sarah Shoraka (Platform London's campaigner on oil and human rights in the Niger Delta)
They spoke about the interconnections between addressing gender justice and environmental sustainability.
Barriers
Speaking about the barriers women face in campaigning, it became clear that many rights that women have won over the years are still under threat.
We still have a long way to go to ensure gender equality.
They highlighted the need to change the values society places on roles and skills that women excel in, which are often undervalued.
Moving forward
Women should find strength in solidarity with each other.
Solutions included:
- holding women only spaces that allow women to share experiences and solutions
- having strong leadership on addressing gender justice issues in work places
The talk was a huge success and was well received by a packed room of women and men.
