British Gas owner announces huge annual profit
23 February 2012

Another week, another huge profit announcement from a Big Six energy company. This time it's Centrica - owners of British Gas.

The weather was mild in the last part of 2011 and people used less gas.

But Centrica still squeezed out an annual profit of £2.4bn - more than the entire Government budget for small-scale solar energy production.

Fuel or food

The news reignites the anger of those living in fuel poverty. Some families must choose between heating and eating - according to a new report by children's charity Barnardo's.

Centrica bosses are set for bumper pay-outs while British Gas customers pay the price with sky-high energy bills - and Britain becomes ever more dependent on expensive, imported coal and gas.

Paul Steedman, Energy Campaigner, Friends of the Earth

Had enough?

Friends of the Earth believes that the Big Six energy firms are ripping us off by keeping us hooked on expensive and dirty imported fossil fuels. In the meantime, millions struggle to pay energy costs.

We're urgently calling on the Government to:

  • Launch a public inquiry into the influence of the Big Six.
  • Back clean British power sources.

Tens of thousands want David Cameron to stand up to the Big Six and ensure energy we can all afford.

Please join them by adding your name to our petition.
